Repentance
Repentance is not a feeling of remorse or being sorry for the consequences of one’s wrong action. It is a total turning from what one has done wrong and resolving never to do the same again. When one repents, he does not go back to do the same again.
He turns 180 degrees from what he has done. He completely turns his back to it. True repentance is seen in the life of the repentant man. He does not go back to it. He leaves the sin behind and moves forward.
Feeling sorry for what one has done without making efforts not to do it again is not repentance. It is false repentance that moves the so-called repentant person to go back to what he has done.
A repentant heart shows it through his subsequent actions. He leaves the wrong action behind him. He resolves not to do the same again and makes efforts to right the wrong action. He does not make excuses for what he has done. Neither does he justify his actions. He erases the wrong from his life and amends it by not repeating it.
Any man who repeatedly does something but professes to repent of it is a liar. When one truly repents of something, he does not go back to it. The repented action no longer attracts him. It is self-deceit for one to claim to have repented from a certain action but continuously indulges in it.
Unrepented sins are snares and dangerous to the believer. They separate him from his Maker and will consequently lead him to hell. Believers therefore must repent of all sins and move away from what they repent of.
Sin is a hindrance to man’s relationship with God. God sees everything – hence man must not think he can deceive himself that he can pretend to lie to God that he has repented without repenting.
Man must always come clean of his sins to be acceptable to God. One cannot hide sins in his heart and be acceptable to God. Therefore, the believer must always confess his sins, repent of his sins and turn away from them.
He should consciously leave them behind and never go back to indulge in them. True repentance saves man from hell and moves to heaven. Unrepentant sins must never be tolerated in the life of the believer. God hates sin. Period.
