The Volta Regional Coordinating Council is urging all residents in the vicinity of the Tordze River to take precautionary measures regarding the current water quality issues in the area.
A press release from the Council on February 19, 2025, stated that agrochemicals spilled from a truck due to an accident into the Tordze River, a tributary of the Volta River, at Tove in the Republic of Togo.
The Council emphasizes the need to assess contamination levels in the Tordze River and its adjoining water bodies before deeming them safe for human use. It warns communities relying on the river for drinking, fishing, irrigation, or washing to refrain from using it until safety is confirmed.
To ensure public safety the Council has directed all affected Municipal and District Assemblies to provide alternative water sources to the impacted communities until the issue is resolved.
