Dr Bawumia remains a strong candidate, and the party does not need to consider alternatives.
A top New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Dr Ayew Afriyie, suggests that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will likely be the party’s candidate for the 2028 election. Dr Afriyie believes Dr Bawumia has successfully marketed himself, making him the best choice for the NPP.
He notes that despite losing the 2024 election, Dr Bawumia remains a strong candidate, and the party does not need to consider alternatives .
Dr Afriyie points out that even though John Mahama lost by a significant margin, he was still considered a viable candidate due to his strong self-marketing. Similarly, Dr Afriyie argues that Dr Bawumia’s marketability makes him an ideal candidate for the NPP in 2028.
In Ghana’s political history, it is not uncommon for politicians to face multiple election defeats before ultimately winning. A few notable examples include John Kufuor, John Atta Mills, and Nana Akufo-Addo, all of whom contested elections three times before emerging victorious.
“Kufuor, for instance, won the presidency in 2000 after two previous attempts. Similarly, Mills secured the presidency in 2008 after losing in 2000 and 2004. Akufo-Addo, who won the presidency in 2016, had previously contested in 2008 and 2012,” he said.
According to him, these examples illustrate that perseverance and determination can ultimately lead to success in Ghana’s democratic process.
