The dangers of illegal mining continue to haunt local communities, as a recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for action.
Two illegal miners lost their lives in a tragic mining pit collapse in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, January 15, 2025, at approximately 2:00 pm.
The incident occurred during a routine “galamsey” (illegal mining) operation. The unstable pit, which had developed cracks, suddenly collapsed, trapping 38-year-old Kyokose and an unidentified companion. While some miners escaped unharmed, Kyokose was fatally injured. His companion, initially in critical condition, succumbed to their injuries at the Toase Clinic.
The bodies of the victims, who were not residents, have been sent to the morgue.
