“We will flog you if you refuse to move from the pavements.“
In a bold move to restore order and integrity to the bustling markets of Kumasi, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Mayor (KMA) is embracing a unique approach that combines democratic ideals with military-style governance. This innovative strategy aims to tackle the challenges posed by indisciplined traders, ensuring a more organised and prosperous trading environment for everyone.
“We will flog you if you refuse to move from the pavements,“ Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, said at a press conference on Monday, April 14, 2025.
The Kumasi Mayor made it clear that he is not interested in reporting many things to the police. “I do not want a situation whereby you put in place a police team, you arrest people, they find their own means out and are back on the streets. That is a waste of time and resources, He said.
He made it clear that, “I have my own democratic military style that I will be implementing. If we tell you to leave this place, and I meet you there with my boys with their whips, we will flog you.”
He cautioned traders doing business on pavements that “If you do not want to experience that kind of situation, know what is right and wrong,” emphasising that those who wanted to make the job of a mayor difficult for him would feel the difficulty they are causing in their bodies.
The KMA Mayor, popularly known as King Zuba, urged all residents to make sure that “we have a disciplined city, sanitised city, and the city we all want.”
