Reports from Ghana’s power distributors – The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) – indicate that the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has begun maintenance work on its gas pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana.
The process known as pigging which would last from February 5, 2025, to March 2, 2025. During this time, gas transportation via reverse flow from Takoradi to Tema will be reduced to allow for the replacement and cleaning of the pipeline.
According to a joint statement from GRIDCo and ECG, the process means that thermal plants in Tema will not have gas to operate and will need to shut down.
The statement assured that “to minimize nationwide power disruptions, energy stakeholders have secured liquid fuel supplies for specific generating plants in Tema. These plants can utilize alternative fuels, ensuring continuous operation during the maintenance period.”
