The Commission has established a structure for discussions with the three countries to ensure clarity and minimize disruption during the transition.
Today, January 29, marks the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger from the ECOWAS.
However, in the spirit of regional solidarity and in the best interest of the people, along with the ECOWAS Authority’s decision to keep its doors open, all relevant authorities within and beyond ECOWAS Member States are urged and expected to: recognize national passports and identity cards with the ECOWAS logo from citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice; continue applying ECOWAS trade and investment policies to goods and services from these countries; maintain visa-free movement, residence, and establishment rights for their citizens; and support and cooperate with ECOWAS officials from these nations in their duties
According to a statement issued by the ECOWAS headquarters on January 29, 2025, these arrangements will be in place until the full determination of the modalities of our future engagement with the three countries by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
In addition, the Commission has established a structure for discussions with the three countries to ensure clarity and minimize disruption during the transition.
