“You cannot be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time.”
Can a devoted Catholic be a member of a Freemason? According to Most Rev John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp.; Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the answer is an emphatic’ NO’.
In a recent circular to the faithful, he said, “The Church has not changed her position on Freemasons. You cannot be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time.”
Quoting a 1983 document titled “Declaration on Masonic Associations” the Metropolitan Archbishop emphasised that “the Church’s negative judgement in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden”
He argued that certain tenets of Freemasonry denigrate Jesus Christ by placing Him on an equal footing with figures like Buddha, Krishna, and Confucius, effectively diminishing his status as Lord and God according to Catholic doctrine. He also criticized Freemasonry for treating the Bible as one among many religious texts, rather than acknowledging its unique divine authority.
