A group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates who contested the 2024 general elections has publicly declared its support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election. The endorsement was announced at a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, January 8, 2026, ahead of the party’s scheduled presidential primaries later this month.
The group said its decision was informed by extensive consultations with party grassroots across the country and reinforced by findings from the NPP’s own post-election review, which concluded that Dr Bawumia was not responsible for the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections. They argued that the former Vice President remains the most prepared, credible and unifying figure to lead the NPP back to power in 2028.
According to the candidates, Dr Bawumia’s track record in economic management, digital transformation and policy innovation, coupled with his vision for inclusive growth and party cohesion, positions him ahead of other aspirants. The endorsement, they noted, signals growing momentum behind his candidacy and a renewed push to consolidate support ahead of the January 31 presidential primaries.
Here is the full statement issued by the group announcing its endorsement of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRESS CONFERENCE HELD BY THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY (NPP) PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES FOR 2024 ELECTIONS ON 8TH JANUARY, 2026 TO DECLARE SUPPORT FOR THE CANDIDATURE OF DR. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA AS FLAGBEARER FOR THE 2028 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media.
We invited you to this Press Conference to, through you, announce to the NPP fraternity in particular and to the generality of the good people of Ghana our decision to support the candidature of H.E. Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia as Flagbearer of our great New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the second time at the 31st January 2026 Presidential Primaries and subsequently lead the Party into the 2028 General Elections.
Ladies and Gentlemen, even though some of the members of this group have in their individual capacities variously supported the candidature of Dr Bawumia; we, convinced that Dr. Bawumia was not the reason nor cause of our 2024 electoral defeat as per the various studies conducted by the Party’s own Oquaye Committee (highlights of which have been provided by the General Secretary) and also but independent institutions (Konrad Adenauer Foundation, NPP Parliamentary Caucus, Political Science Dept of the University of Ghana); after extensive engagements amongst ourselves and importantly after engaging our Poling Station Executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, Constituency Executives, Former Constituency Executives, Council of Elders and Patrons to come together and collectively declare our support for Dr Bawumia’s candidature for the 2028 Presidential Elections.
This declaration, Ladies and Gentlemen, following the one earlier made by our 63 compatriots who were victorious in the 2024 Parliamentary Elections and are today ably representing the Party in Parliament, is intended to send a clear message to the grassroots of our Party and the good people of Ghana that the majority of their representatives whom they chose to lead the Party during the 2024 General Elections are strongly united behind the candidature of Dr. Bawumia. We must at the very outset state that this decision is not borne out of any parochial or self-interest on our part. It has been taken after sober reflection and based on a deep sense of duty to our great Party in particular and the future direction of our dear nation Ghana.
We have listened to key stakeholders in our various constituencies including
our Polling Station Executives; Electoral Area Coordinators; Constituency
Executives; Former Constituency Executives; Council of Elders and Patrons. We have also listened to the youth; market women; our farmers and fisherfolk; business men and women; opinion leaders; religious leaders and traditional authorities and have come to the conclusion that there exist broad and overwhelming consensus that Dr Bawumia is best placed, amongst all the eminent personalities who are vying for the Flagbearer position of our Party, to lead our great Party into the 2028 General Elections.
The greater majority of well-meaning Ghanaians are looking to us, delegates,
to do just that. Dr. Bawumia has proven himself to be a visionary leader; with a track record of competence, integrity, and commitment to Ghana’s development. His experience as Vice President, coupled with his policy initiatives and innovative ideas, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.
His exceptional leadership skills, demonstrated during his tenure as Vice President; His technical expertise in economics and finance; His commitment to Ghana’s digital transformation and good governance; His compassion and empathy for the Ghanaian people are key qualities that make Dr Bawumia an ideal leader for our Party at this time.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we believe that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership will be a game-changer for Ghana, hence our decision to support his candidature. By so doing we are committed to working with him in whatever capacity to achieve a brighter future for our dear country, Ghana. In essence, whether some of us here intend to seek the mandate of our Constituents in the yet to be organised Parliamentary Primaries as part of the Party’s preparations towards the 2028 General Elections or not is immaterial – indeed, our personal ambitions have no bearing whatsoever – to our collective resolve to support H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming Presidential Primaries. Please be assured that non of us has been induced, compelled or cajoled, nor railroaded into taking this position that we are making public today. Any suggestion of inducement (as is often bandied about when declarations of this nature are made) should be roundly dismissed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is not in doubt, that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has
been the most consequential Vice President so far in the 4th Republic. That, regardless of his limited Constitutionally defined role of assisting the President in the execution of his mandate to the people of Ghana; Dr. Bawumia, with the consent and concurrence of his (and our) Boss, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo personally championed the implementation of several notable policy initiatives and achievements. These include but not limited to:
– Championing Ghana’s digital transformation, introducing iinitiatives such
as the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and digitizing public
records.
– As chair of the economic management team, championed the implementation of policies aimed at economic stability and growth, including tax reforms and financial inclusion. A notable intervention that is today driving the sustained improvement of the macroeconomic indicators is the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (Gold for Reserves, Gold for Forex and Gold for Oil) initiated by Dr Bawumia and implemented by the Bank of Ghana and the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) (Now Goldbod) to deal with the dire economic situation that the Akufo-Addo government had to endure as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The pandemic without doubt compounded our already strained financial resources arising from the Energy Sector debt and Banking Sector Cleanup costs!!! The Domestic Gold Purchase Program has proven to be a
masterstroke initiative that has in the short to medium term served as the cornerstone on which the NDC government’s so-called economic “success” has hinged on.
– He assisted President Akufo-Addo in overseeing the construction of roads,
education, and healthcare infrastructure, including the Agenda 111 hospitals project.
These and several other contributions to, and achievements of the Akufo- Addo administration are what makes Dr Bawumia stand head and shoulders above the other contenders.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we say so without any malice or disdain towards the
other aspirants all of whom have earned their pride of place and the respect
of all for their varied contributions to the growth and development of the NPP.
We have followed the campaign of all these fine gentlemen of our Party some of whom have chalked immense successes in business, governance and in the policy space; however when all the key parameters required for leading our great party into 2028 are taken together; we are unconvinced, at this time, that any of them match up to the pedigree, experience, competence, vision, bold ideas, intellect, integrity, humility and compassion that Dr Bawumia embodies today. He simply is the most PREPARED, FORMIDABLE AND WINNABLE CANDIDATE.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are even more fortified in our belief because of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision for Ghana’s future which he has outlined over the years to include:
– A Digital Ghana : Leveraging technology to drive economic growth, improve
governance, and enhance citizen services.
– Economic Transformation : Promoting industrialization, entrepreneurship,
and private sector-led growth to create jobs and reduce poverty.
– Infrastructure Development : Investing in roads, energy, water, and digital
infrastructure to support economic growth.
– Human Capital Development : Prioritizing education, healthcare, and skills
training to empower Ghanaians.
– Agricultural Modernization : Transforming agriculture through technology,
innovation, and value-added processing.
– Good Governance : Strengthening institutions, promoting transparency,
and fighting corruption.
– Regional Integration : Strengthening Ghana’s role in West Africa and
promoting regional trade and cooperation.
In addition to his broad and transformative vision for Ghana, Dr Bawumia
has outlined key reforms and proposals to better the lot of the grassroots of
the NPP who work tirelessly for the Party to gain political power but are often
neglected or relegated to the back burner when the Party forms government.
Key among these are :
– His proposal to make a minimum of 10 high level appointments per constituency to support employment and development;
– The establishment of a “Welfare Database” to document specific needs of members such as healthcare, education, job placements, capital for business etc. This is will facilitate an inclusive growth of all party members; and
– Constituency based budgeting to decentralize contract awards so as to ensure that we are able to build businessmen and women in every constituency. Contracts will no longer be awarded in Accra to individuals and a select few.
We wish to commend Dr Bawumia for his dedication to the party and his tireless efforts at promoting unity and cohesion among the rank and file of the NPP. His leadership will undoubtedly strengthen the party and position it for success in the 2028 General elections.
As parliamentary candidates who were privileged to be on the Party’s ticket with Dr Bawumia for the 2024 General Elections, we pledge to work closely with Dr Bawumia and the entire membership of the Party to ensure a resounding victory for the NPP in 2028. We call on all NPP members, supporters, and Ghanaians to join us in rallying behind Dr Bawumia’s candidature to win the Presidential Primaries and subsequently the 2028 Presidential Elections to implement his transformative policies that can only go to advance the cause of our beloved country, Ghana.
May God bless us all and our homeland, Ghana.
May God bless the New Patriotic Party and all its teeming members and
Executives.
May God bless Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, our Incoming Flagbearer and by the Grace of God, the next President of Ghana.
Thank you.
