MALDIVES: In a landmark address on the occasion of the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering commitment to sovereignty, pledging that Maldivians themselves will safeguard every square inch of their territory.
His remarks were delivered at a historic joint gathering of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS)—the first such address by a sitting Maldivian Head of State to both security institutions simultaneously.
President Muizzu’s speech underscored the strategic emphasis his administration places on strengthening the country’s security apparatus. Acknowledging that this prioritisation has drawn questions from some quarters, the President argued that in a geopolitically sensitive region, national preparedness remains essential. He noted that despite the Maldives’ small population, it is the responsibility of Maldivians to ensure the defence and integrity of their extensive maritime domain.
While recognising the necessity of technical cooperation with international partners, President Muizzu firmly asserted that national policy does not permit foreign powers to lead in Maldivian affairs. Instead, such collaboration must serve to complement—rather than compromise—the country’s sovereign decision-making.
The President paid tribute to the heroes of the nation’s independence movement and called on citizens to honour their legacy through vigilance and collective responsibility. He emphasised that safeguarding the Maldives’ hard-won sovereignty is a generational obligation—one that must be actively preserved for the future.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of both the MNDF and MPS, describing this as a central pillar of national development and a profound expression of patriotism.
