Former Minister for Roads and Highways and current member of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has strongly refuted recent claims made by Finance Minister Hon. Dr. Ato Forson during the presentation of the mid-year budget.
In a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight,” Hon. Asenso-Boakye described as “false and misleading” the assertion that the Akufo-Addo administration secured loans for the Ofankor–Nsawam Road and Suame Interchange projects but diverted the funds elsewhere.
He clarified that the $750 million Afreximbank Facility obtained under the previous administration was a multi-purpose infrastructure loan, transparently approved by Parliament, and structured to finance a broad portfolio of critical national road projects. These included:
- Ofankor–Nsawam Road
- Suame Interchange
- Flowerpot Interchange
- Dualization of School Junction to Motorway (Borteyman)
- Bypasses on the Accra–Kumasi Road (Osino, Anyinam, Enyiresi, and Konongo)
According to Hon. Asenso-Boakye, the facility was designed to complement Government of Ghana counterpart funding and was disbursed in phases based on clearly defined project milestones.
He expressed concern over what he described as a distortion of facts for political gain, urging the current government to focus on completing these transformative infrastructure projects in the national interest.
“Let us engage the public based on facts. Ghanaians deserve honesty and clarity on matters of national development,” he concluded.
