President Akufo-Addo has rejected a petition by Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo over allegations of misconduct and incompetence.
The Presidency firmly asserts that there are no justifiable grounds for the removal of the Chief Justice. This declaration underscores the importance of upholding judicial independence and maintaining confidence in our legal system.
A statement released by the Presidency on January 6, 2024, said “The Office of the President wishes to inform the general public that, after a thorough and careful review of the petition for the removal of the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in consultation with the Council of State, has concluded that the petition does not disclose a prima facie case warranting further action,” the statement read.
The Presidency further noted that the petition failed to provide sufficient evidence or documentation to substantiate its claims. It also cautioned against efforts to undermine the judiciary’s independence through what it described as “baseless allegations,” stressing the importance of adhering to constitutional procedures when addressing grievances against judicial officers.
