“Sport is a powerful catalyst, and Ghana is blessed with immense talent.”
The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, participated in the launch of the 3rd edition of the NFL’s Flag Football Tournament in Ghana on Friday, October 18, 2024.
Speaking at the event, Dr Bawumia revealed that when he first discussed the inaugural edition with the NFL leadership two years ago, it started modestly with 10 schools in the Greater Accra Region. By the second edition last year, the number of participating schools had increased to 15.
“I am pleased to note that this year, the NFL expanded the number of participating schools to 24, including, for the first time, schools from other regions of the country, which competed in the play-offs for today’s main championship,” he said.

The NPP Flagbearer emphasized that supporting and promoting American Football has opened opportunities for hundreds of Africans. He added that expanding this and other emerging global sports at the school level will be a priority for his government starting in January 2025, by God’s grace.
He noted with satisfaction that, “The achievements of the two young Ghanaian teams that represented both Ghana and Africa at the NFL’s global championship in 2023 and 2024, along with the remarkable contributions of Ghanaian NFL stars like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Brian Asamoah, and Ezekiel Ansah, among others, are clear indications that developing these sports in Ghana, alongside our traditional disciplines, with proper funding and attention, will greatly benefit both the youth and the nation. Sports is a powerful catalyst, and Ghana is blessed with immense talent.”
