
“The people of Ghana will decide based on the policies you put forward.”
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called for calm and caution among Ghana’s political leaders as the country approaches the December 7 election.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace, on November 26, 2024, he urged politicians to prioritize peace and stability over personal interests and to accept the outcome of the election regardless of who wins.
The occasion was when President Akufo-Addo conveyed his appreciation to Otumfuo for the enormous support offered him before his election and during his two terms in Office as the head of state and head of government.
With just some days to the election, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II reminded politicians that Ghana’s interests should come first, pointing out the importance of respectful campaigning,
Otumfuo Osei Tutu advised political leaders to focus on sharing their policies rather than resorting to insults and intimidation.
The Asantehene made it clear that Ghanaians will vote based on the policies presented to them, and that the election winner will become the next President. He called on all politicians to prioritize Ghana’s well-being and to ensure a smooth transition of power.
“We are only 12 days away from election day, and Ghana must take precedence over all individual interests. Voting is done with the thumb, and once the election is over, we must all rally behind the winner. This is not a time for conflict or insults. Focus on presenting your policies and avoid intimidation or offensive behaviour,” the Asantehene said.
He added, “The people of Ghana will decide based on the policies you put forward. Mr. President, you have assured me of overseeing a smooth transition. I remind all politicians that Ghana’s well-being is the priority, and the winner will assume the role of the next President.”
On his part, President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu for his invaluable support and guidance throughout his governance. He acknowledged that Otumfuo’s counsel played a significant role in his success, and he was thankful for the Asantehene’s wisdom and leadership.
He appealed to the Asantehene to help ensure a peaceful election this year. Emphasizing Ghana’s exemplary democracy in Africa and the world’s watchful eyes, the President urged the Asantehene to continue promoting peace and stability.
This is not the first time President Akufo-Addo has expressed his appreciation to the Asantehene and the people of Asanteman. In 2021, he thanked them for their role in his re-election, acknowledging that their support was crucial to his victory.
