
“We frown upon all forms of violence and violations of all human rights”
The Ghana Chapter of Amnesty International (AI) has written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to request information on arrests of protestors and other matters related to the #stopgalamseynow protest
Amnesty International is an impartial, non-political human rights organization working for the promotion and protection of fundamental human rights worldwide.
“We are writing to request information regarding the individuals arrested in connection with the #StopGalamseyNow protests that took place from September 22nd and 23rd”, Amnesty said in a letter to the IGP dated on September 25, 2024.
Amnesty Ghana, emphasized that “As a human rights organization, it frowns upon all forms of violence and violations of all human rights including the rights to freedom of assembly and expression which is enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Ghana and is deeply concerned about the reported violation of these rights during these recent demonstrations”.
The letter signed by its Country Director, Genevieve Partington, urged the Police to respect the rights of the protestors.

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON ARRESTS OF PROTESTORS AND OTHER MATTERS RELATED TO THE #STOPGALAMSEYNOW PROTEST
We are writing to request information regarding the individuals arrested in connection with the #StopGalamseyNow protests that took place from September 22nd and 23rd. Specifically, we seek the following details:
- The total number of individuals arrested as of 25th September 2024
- The full names of all the arrested persons.
- The locations where each person is currently stationed.
We would appreciate this information so we can urgently cater to the basic needs of the detained protestors. As a human rights organization, Amnesty International Ghana frowns upon all forms of violence and violations of all human rights including the rights to freedom of assembly and expression which is enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Ghana and is deeply concerned about the reported violation of these rights during these recent demonstrations.
As a matter of urgency, we call upon the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to respect the fundamental human rights of protesters
