Maldives: President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on local councils and public institutions to set aside political divides and work collaboratively in delivering services, underscoring that community welfare must take precedence over partisan interests.
Speaking during his tour of South Maalhosmadulu Atoll, the President cautioned that when political agendas overshadow public service, communities bear the brunt. He assured citizens that his administration is committed to transparent, accountable governance that prioritises service delivery and empowers local councils.
Addressing concerns over amendments to the Decentralisation Act, Dr. Muizzu clarified that the reforms were designed to strengthen community autonomy, asserting that empowered communities directly enhance the capacity of local governance. While acknowledging the integrity of most councils, he stressed that accountability and professionalism are non-negotiable in public service.
The President’s address also highlighted a slate of development initiatives for Dharavandhoo over the next 18 months. These include an eight-classroom block, office facilities, and a multipurpose hall for Baa Atoll School to boost educational infrastructure; upgrades to healthcare services; and investments in sports and recreation. Road and harbour development projects are planned, alongside tourism enhancements aimed at generating sustainable local revenue.
In a nod to economic infrastructure, Dr. Muizzu announced plans to modernise Dharavandhoo Airport—one of the nation’s busiest regional hubs—assigning the upgrade to Island Aviation Services through proper legal channels.
The President reiterated that “responsible public service” demands cooperation across political lines, equal treatment for all citizens, and a focus on delivering tangible results that strengthen both communities and the national economy.
