MALDIVES: President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the new Justice Building Annex in Hulhumalé, now home to the Criminal Court and Drug Court. This strategic relocation is part of the Government’s broader reforms aimed at easing longstanding infrastructural and operational challenges within the Maldivian criminal justice system.
Previously located in overcrowded facilities in Malé, the two courts have faced repeated disruptions, most notably, frequent postponements of hearings and delays in verdicts due to inadequate courtroom space. The new annex, developed by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), features ten courtrooms for the Criminal Court, five for the Drug Court, and dedicated spaces for judges, prosecutors, and defence lawyers, designed to support efficient judicial processes.
The relocation serves as an interim solution ahead of the construction of the Superior Court Complex, also planned for Hulhumalé, which President Muizzu confirmed would commence later this year. In his earlier address to the nation, the President emphasised the importance of ensuring that both courts are fully operational in their new facility by August 2025.
At the inauguration ceremony, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving access to justice, expressing hope that the improved infrastructure will accelerate case resolution—particularly for individuals in prolonged pre-trial detention—and bring unreported cases to light.
