While the game was intense and well-contested, Kotoko’s strategy of focusing on counter-attacks and winning the midfield battle proved effective.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday, December 15, 2024, narrowly defeated their arch-rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, by a score of 1-0. Despite facing intense pressure from Hearts, Kotoko managed to hold on and secure a crucial victory. A late goal proved to be the difference between the two teams, leaving Hearts disappointed and Kotoko celebrating.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko Head Coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, speaking at a post-match press conference commended Hearts of Oak midfielder Salim Adams for his vision and ability to create dangerous situations during their clash at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
However, he highlighted Kotoko’s Justice Blay’s effective role in neutralizing Adams’ impact. Ogum also commended Hearts for their strong structure and competitive performance, noting the game’s tight and well-organized nature.
Ogum acknowledged that his team needs improvement despite their 1-0 victory over Hearts of Oak. He pointed out that Kotoko squandered numerous goal-scoring opportunities, particularly in the first half. He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue to secure future wins.
While the game was intense and well-contested, Kotoko’s strategy of focusing on counter-attacks and winning the midfield battle proved effective.
“The game was closely contested, with both teams playing defensively in the first half. Kotoko decided to let Hearts attack first with three players, while Kotoko focused on dominating the midfield. This strategy allowed Kotoko to win the initial ball and then either transition into a passing game or play the ball behind the defence, which led to several scoring opportunities in the first half,” Coach Ogum recounted.
A late goal by Albert Amoah secured the victory for Kotoko, moving them up to sixth place in the league.
