The President of the Republic of Suriname, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, has extended an official invitation to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, to attend the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebration in Paramaribo.
The invitation, formally read before the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace on Thursday, October 16, 2025, conveys President Geerlings-Simons’ warm regard for the Asante Monarch and his esteemed role in promoting unity, peace, and cultural diplomacy across Africa and the global community.
Suriname’s Golden Jubilee, scheduled for November 25, 2025, marks a historic milestone for the South American nation, which shares deep ancestral and cultural links with the African continent through centuries of migration and heritage.
In her letter, President Geerlings-Simons noted that the presence of the Asantehene would bring great honour and dignity to the national celebration, symbolising the enduring bond between the peoples of Suriname and Ghana.
The invitation is widely viewed as a gesture of mutual respect and recognition of Otumfuo’s global statesmanship and commitment to fostering dialogue among nations. His attendance is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Suriname and Ghana, and more broadly, to highlight the shared cultural roots connecting the Caribbean and West Africa.
The event will bring together world leaders, traditional authorities, and members of the international community to commemorate five decades of Suriname’s independence, reflecting on its progress and aspirations for a more integrated and inclusive future.
