Vice President Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, led a solemn government delegation to the homes of five families devastated by the tragic August 6 military helicopter crash.
The condolence visits came just days after a dignified state funeral was held in Accra, honouring the victims whose service to the nation spanned politics, national security, and disaster management.
Speaking softly and with visible empathy, Professor Opoku Agyemang, who is acting President in the absence of President John Mahama on official duties in Japan, assured the families of the government’s unwavering support. She emphasised that beyond the ceremonies and public tributes, the welfare of the widows, children, and dependents of the deceased remained a priority.
“The nation mourns with you, and the Government stands ready to walk with you through this painful journey,” she said during one of the private sessions.
The victims whose families were visited included:
- Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)
- Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Deputy National Security Coordinator (Human Security)
- Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, former Defence Minister
- Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
At each home, the Vice President held closed-door discussions, listening intently to the families’ concerns and pledging continued state support.
The high-powered delegation reflected the gravity of the tragedy. It included Chief of Staff Julius Debrah; Senior Presidential Advisor Dr Valarie Sawyerr; Alex Segbefia, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President; Economic Advisor Seth Terkper; Deputy Chief of Staff (Finance & Administration) Nana Oye Bampoe Addo; NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey; and Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Hajia Shamima Muslim.
A spokesman for the Limuna family later described the visits as deeply consoling. “The government’s presence has strengthened us. We feel the nation’s love and support in this moment of grief,” he said.
The crash sparked a nationwide outpouring of sorrow. But through these personal visits, the Government has signalled its commitment to ensuring the families are not left behind as the country heals.
