“It is about safeguarding the sanctity and independence of our judiciary, a pillar of our democracy.”
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, a group of young Ghanaian citizens peacefully assembled near Independence Square, near the ongoing proceedings concerning the Chief Justice. The gathering aimed to voice their concerns, calling for justice, transparency, and the reconsideration of the suspension of the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The demonstrators emphasised the importance of due process and accountability within the framework of Ghana’s democratic values.
The protesters carried placards with messages such as “Chief Justice Suspension Is Political,” “Stop Undermining the Judiciary,” “Don’t Erode Public Trust,” “Save Our Justice System,” and “Restore the Chief Justice Now!” They voiced strong opposition to what they see as a blatant, politically motivated effort to destabilize Ghana’s judiciary and undermine the integrity of the justice system.
According to the group, this movement transcends the fate of one individual. “This is not just about one person,” they declared.
“It is about safeguarding the sanctity and independence of our judiciary, a pillar of our democracy. The Chief Justice has served Ghana with honour and integrity. If there are genuine allegations, let them be addressed openly and transparently, not hidden behind closed doors. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
The protestors alleged that certain actors within the political establishment may be engaged in a concerted effort to undermine the credibility of the Chief Justice, attributing this to her unwavering commitment to judicial independence. They characterised the suspension as a “complete charade,” further describing it as “arguably the most significant affront to the judiciary in the nation’s history.” These assertions underscore growing concerns about perceived encroachments on the autonomy of the judicial arm of government and the implications for democratic governance.
