Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC), celebrates her 73rd birthday today, with the party marking the occasion as a moment of national significance.
In a statement released on Monday, the UNC extended heartfelt wishes to its leader, describing her birthday as “no ordinary” milestone, but a special event not just for Persad-Bissessar, but for the entire party and nation.
“Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been a trailblazer, a fighter, a mother of the nation, and a symbol of strength and compassion,” the statement read. “She shattered glass ceilings so others could walk through them.”
Persad-Bissessar was Trinidad and Tobago’s first female Attorney General, first female Leader of the Opposition, and first woman to serve as Prime Minister. The UNC hailed her for a lifetime of public service, visionary leadership, and an “unrelenting fight for justice.”
The party’s executive, parliamentary team, local government representatives, and support arms all joined in celebrating Persad-Bissessar’s contributions, reiterating their faith in her leadership as the country prepares for what the party called “historic elections.”
“May you continue to be blessed with strength, health, love, and the unbreakable support of all those who believe in your mission,” the UNC added.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar was born on April 22, 1952. She has led the UNC since 2010 and served as Prime Minister from 2010 to 2015.
