The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced plans to establish an award scheme in honour of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene. The initiative aims to preserve and celebrate the legacy of the influential leader and promote cultural heritage in Africa.
The award will recognize and support young African artists across various creative disciplines, including visual arts, music, literature, and film. It will provide recipients with financial support, mentorship opportunities, and international exposure to advance their careers and contribute to the cultural landscape of the continent.
The UNESCO award is set to launch in May 2025, coinciding with the 26th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s enstoolment as Asantehene. This significant milestone will mark the beginning of a lasting tribute to the leader’s contributions to Ghanaian society and African culture.
This was announced by Mr. Edmond Moukala N’Gouemo, the UNESCO Head and Representative to Ghana, during a symposium on November 22, 2024. The symposium commemorated the 100th anniversary of the return of Asantehene Prempeh I from exile.
Mr. N’Gouemo praised Otumfuo’s wisdom and insight, particularly his idea to bring the world together to celebrate African ingenuity and cultural heritage.
He mentioned that UNESCO has been working with Manhyia to establish an award prize for young creative artists. The initiative aims to preserve traditional techniques and pass them down to the younger generation.
“This collaboration involves the Manhyia Palace Museum, KNUST College of Arts, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, British Airways, and IAG Cargo. The goal is to provide resources and opportunities to these artists, helping to preserve and promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage,” Mr. N’Gouemo said.
